On some of our ships, we are in the luxury position of having extra accommodation for trainees. The crew manager and training coordinator are selecting people from the appliances that trainees still at school send to our office. Once somebody is selected for his or her application, the trainee is assigned to a ship for a training period on board. Once on board, the training is done by the whole crew in general and by an appointed mentor especially. The captain plays a role in the communication between trainee and office and is quite often mentor as well and assesses the performance.
During the training period on board, trainees are performing as many tasks as possible and maintain a task book in which those tasks are being signed off by the mentors. Trainees also have to write a number of projects which needs to be approved by their school mentor. They are in regular contact with their mentor at school who is in contact with the training coordinator at our office to make the circle complete.
