Behind the Scenes: Captain Andrey Bykov
For over twelve years, Captain Andrey Bykov has been a familiar face at MF Shipping Group. What began as a temporary assignment as Chief Officer on the Daniel K. has grown into a long-term career with the fleet. Since 2021, he has been at the helm of the Antje K.
How it All started
Andrey began his maritime career in 2000 as an Able Bodied Seaman. Thanks to his dedication, patience, and years of experience, he worked his way up to the position of captain.
He started as Chief Officer aboard the Daniel K. He then advanced to the position of captain and has sailed on various ships over the years. In 2021, he joined the Antje K. as captain.
Andrey finds his greatest motivation at home, with his family. His father, who was a pilot and captain of an aircraft crew, also inspired him greatly. Although their fields of work differ, Andrey recognizes the same sense of responsibility that both professions entail.
The ship has its own routines and responsibilities, but the atmosphere among the crew is what matters most. I believe it starts with me: if I remain calm, consistent, and respectful, that contributes to a positive atmosphere for everyone on board.
Leadership with Calm, Respect, and Attention
For Andrey, life on board is about more than just operational responsibilities. He believes that a positive atmosphere among the crew and attention to his colleagues’ mental well-being are just as important. He believes that leadership begins with calm, respect, and consistency.
Over the years, he has learned a great deal from colleagues and supervisors. A captain he met when he was second mate left a lasting impression and shaped his view of leadership.
What do you like to do in your free time on board?
When I have free time on board, I like to keep it simple. I watch movies, listen to music, and read books. I love fantasy and real-life literature, and I appreciate authors like Erich Maria Remarque, Patrick Süskind, Viktor Pelevin, Sergei Lukyanenko, and the Strugatsky brothers. I also listen to heavier music; it helps me unwind after work.
Looking back over the years, what stands out?
Technology has radically changed life on board, making it easier for seafarers to stay in touch with their families. The essence of the profession, however, remains unchanged: dedication, teamwork, and resilience.
